There are tons of free music players available but Rhythmbox stands out because of its stability, reliability, and ability to handle tens of thousands of songs and support of plugins.

Rhythmbox is a GNOME-based music player, but it also goes pretty well with other desktop environments. Some notable features of Rhythmbox are:

  1. It can play music from your local drive, stream internet radio, and podcasts.
  2. It can make a smart playlist.
  3. It lets you enable gapless playback.
  4. It enables your audio CDs to be burned.
  5. It automatically searches artwork for the tracks.
  6. It also allows SoundCloud integration.
  7. It can display lyrics if they are present in the database.

Rhythmbox is now a default music player in many Linux distributions including Ubuntu. Aside from that,  it can be installed if it is not present in your distribution by default using a couple of approaches. Let’s check how to get the Latest Rhythmbox on your Ubuntu device:

Installing Rhythmbox on Ubuntu 20.04 (LTS) and 20.10 using Ubuntu’s Software Center

The first method of installing a Rhythmbox audio player is less complex and easy. Just open the  software store from the application as shown in the image below:

How to Stream from Linux to Your TV https://linuxhint.com/stream_linux_to_tv/ Mon, 25 May 2020 01:36:56 +0000 https://linuxhint.com/?p=60475

Knowing how to stream from your computer to your TV comes in handy when you want to stream your media – pictures, video, music, or videogames – on the big screen, rather than on your small computer or laptop screen.Luckily, you can stream your media from Linux to your TV! In this article, we will teach you how to do exactly that.

HDMI Cable

This is one of the easiest ways to stream from Linux to a TV. Most smart and non-smart TV sets come with HDMI, or High-Definition Multimedia Interface, ports. With these cables, you can easily stream from your Linux OS to your TV.

These HDMI cables vary in length. Typically, they are of 2-3m in length. They do not cost much, and are very straightforward to install and use.

To link your Linux OS to your TV using an HDMI cable, follow these steps:

  1. Connect HDMI to both TV and your laptop.
  2. Press the Input list option on your TV remote.
  3. Choose the HDMI option.

Note: It could be any one of the HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or HDMI 3 selections, depending on the port number into which you plugged the HDMI cable.

Chromecast

Google Chromecast is a device that can be plugged into any TV. After you have configured the device, it allows you to cast media from your phone or computer to the TV screen. Chromecast is a small and portable tool which allows you to stream media or cast your entire desktop screen on a TV.

If Chromecast is not available in your local market, consider buying alternatives, such as the Xiaomi Mi Box S, which comes with built-in Chromecast.

Ways to use Chromecast are discussed below:

Chromecast using Google Chrome

Step 1: Open Google Chrome and click on the 3 dots in the top right corner.

Step 2: Select the “Cast…” option.

Step 3: From the “Cast…” tab, select which device to which you wish to cast your screen. By clicking the “Sources” option, you can decide whether you want to cast the current tab, your entire desktop, or a file to the device.

After following these steps, your screen or file will be cast to the connected device.

Chromecast Using VLC media player

VLC media player is one of the most popular media players in the market. VLC media player is open-source and you can use this program to play your audio and video files.

If you are playing a file on this program and you wish to cast it to your TV screen, that will not be a problem. This is because the VLC media player supports Chromecast. You can cast your file to the TV in a few easy steps.

Step 1: Open the file in VLC media player that you wish to cast to your TV screen.

Step 2: Click “Playback.”

Step 3: Click “Renderer” and select the device to which you wish to cast your file.

Chromecast Using Terminal

You can use your terminal to cast your files to a TV. You may cast local files or YouTube videos.

Step 1: Open your terminal

Step 2: Install mkchromecast. I already have this installed, and you can install it using the following terminal command:

$ sudo apt install mkchromecast

Step 3: Enter the below command to see a list of available networks. In the top right corner, you will be able to see a new Chromecast icon. Click the icon and select your TV.

$ mkchromecast -t

If you are unable to see any devices, select the “Search for Media Streaming Devices” option.

Step 4: To cast media to the selected device, use the following commands:

For local files:

$ mkchromecast --video -i /home/videos/cast.mp4

You may replace “/home/videos/cast.mp4” with the path of your own local video file.

For YouTube videos:

$ mkchromecast -ylink” –video

Instead of “link,” paste the video URL you wish to cast to the device.

Screen Share Using Ubuntu’s ‘Media Sharing’

Using Media Sharing, you may view the files located on your desktop on a smart TV.

In previous versions, to share your screen to a TV, you had to use third-party tools – but no longer. As of Ubuntu 19.10, Ubuntu comes with a built-in feature that allows you to share your files.

To do this, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open settings.

Step 2: Scroll down and click “Sharing.”

Step 3: Click the slider in the top right corner to enable sharing.

Step 4: Click “Media Sharing.” Click the slider to turn it on. Select the network through which you intend to share the media.

You Music, Videos, and Pictures folders are shared by default. You may remove a directory by pressing the cross icon and add a directory by pressing the plus icon and then choosing the directory of your choice.

Conclusion

There are several methods through which you can stream your Linux desktop on your TV or some other device. Some of these methods require external hardware, while others do not. Some methods require a third-party tool to stream your desktop to the TV if you have not yet updated past Ubuntu 19.10.

Chromecast comes with several features, but is not available in every country. The HDMI cable method is a simple and better option compared to other methods, but it requires you to always be within a 2-3 metre range of the television, which can be a hassle when your TV and computer are not in the same room.

That leaves us with the media share option that came with the Ubuntu 19.10 update. If you have not upgraded already, all you need to do is upgrade your Ubuntu to reap these benefits without having to purchase additional hardware.

How to Play MP3 Files from Command Line https://linuxhint.com/play_mp3_files_commandline/ Mon, 24 Feb 2020 18:50:23 +0000 https://linuxhint.com/?p=55629 When you’re spending most of your time on the console screen looking at texts, running commands and burning out, what could be more refreshing than listening to your favorite music? Besides refreshment, there are other situations where you might want to play music directly from the command line.

In this article, we’ll be checking out how you can play an MP3 file directly from the CLI.

Playing MP3 from command

For this task, we’ll be needing the appropriate tool(s) installed on the system. Depending on what tool you have at your disposal, the method of playing an MP3 is going to differ. In this article, I’ll be showcasing a handful of methods using different tools.

To find the package name for your distro, Pkgs.org is the best place to search for. You can also use the search feature of your package manager to determine the exact package name.

VLC To Play MP3 From Command Line

VLC is one of the best media players. If you have VLC installed, then we can use the VLC command-line interface to play an MP3. The command structure looks like this.

$ nvlc <mp3_file>

If you have a directory full of MP3 files and you want to play them all, then run this command.

$ nvlc /path/to/dir

Want randomized playback of the playlist? Use the “–random” flag.

$ nvlc --random /path/to/dir

Here, the nvlc tool is the ncurses interface to the VLC player. Interestingly, in this interface, all the common control hotkeys like spacebar, arrow keys etc. works. For example, to pause the playback, press the spacebar; to go forward/backward, press the right/left arrow key.

The cvlc is another miniature interface of VLC for the command line. However, compared to nvlc, this one is even more simplistic and less verbose. To play an MP3 file using clvc, run this command.

$ cvlc <mp3_file>

Mpg123 to Play MP3 From Command Line

This is a very simple tool to play an MP3 file. It doesn’t come pre-installed with most of the distro. To install it, use your package manager’s search function to find for mpg123. It’s highly likely that you’ll find it by the exact name.

Assuming that you have the tool installed, let’s get started. For playing an MP3 file, the command structure for this tool goes like this.

$ mpg123 <mp3_file>

The common key shortcuts for pause, next/previous etc. are supported, for example, spacebar, arrow keys etc.

Want multiple MP3 files as a playlist? Assuming all the MP3 files are within the same directory, use this command.

$ mpg123 *.mp3

For shuffle playback of the playlist, add the “-Z” flag.

$ mpg123 -Z *.mp3

Want loop? Use the “–loop” flag. Here, the command will run the MP3 file 100 times.

$ mpg123 --loop 100 <mp3_file>

To reduce the output clutter, you can use the “-q” or “–quiet” flag.

$ mpg123 -q <mp3_file>

There’ll be no output, but no need to be afraid. Use the shortcut keys to control its behavior.

  • ffplay

FFmpeg is one of the most powerful media tools that you can use to perform numerous tasks. It generally doesn’t come pre-installed but available on all the major Linux distros. This tool comes with a built-in media player named FFplay.

To play an MP3 file with FFplay, run this command.

$ ffplay <mp3_file>

The media player will start playing the file with a GUI window showing the spectrum analyzer. If you don’t want the GUI to pop up, add the “-nodisp” flag.

$ ffplay -nodisp <mp3_file>

Want to play a single file in a loop? Run the command. Here, the MP3 will be played in a loop 100 times.

$ ffplay -hide_banner -nodisp -loop 100 <mp3_file>

Generally, ffplay and all the FFmpeg tools will show a short report on the build config and license information. To disable this report in the output, add the “-hide_banner” flag.

$ ffplay -nodisp -hide_banner <mp3_file>

Mplayer to Play MP3 From Command Line

This is a very simplistic media player on Linux that can play common media files like MP3. It’s available on almost all the major Linux ecosystems. When using in CLI, Mplayer supports the default hotkeys like spacebar, arrow keys etc. for pause/resume, going forward/backward etc.

To play an MP3 with Mplayer, run this command.

$ mplayer <mp3_file>

The Mplayer CLI also supports the default pause/resume/positioning hotkeys. It also supports playing multiple files from a directory.

$ mplayer *.mp3

When you’re telling the player to play a lot of MP3 files, shuffling can be enjoyable. If you want mplayer to shuffle, use the “-shuffle” flag.

$ mplayer -shuffle *.mp3

To get less verbose output, Mplayer supports the “-quiet” argument.

$ mplayer -quiet <mp3_file>

Want even less verbose output? Use the “-really-quiet” flag.

$ mplayer -really-quiet <mp3_file>

If you want to play the MP3 in the GUI, use the “-gui” flag.

$ mplayer -gui <mp3_file>

If you want to disable the GUI, then use “-nogui” instead.

$ mplayer -nogui <mp3_file>

Looping is also supported. THe following command will run your selected MP3 file(s) for 100 times.

$ mplayer -really-quiet -loop 100 <mp3_file>

If you just want the audio of an MP4 file, then use the following command. Here, we’re disabling the video part.

$ mplayer -really-quiet -vo null <mp4_file>

The number of command arguments that mplayer support is HUGE! If you’re interested in it, check out the man page.

$ man mplayer

Sox to Play MP3 From Command Line

Sox is another powerful media player, often referred to as the “Swiss army knife” of audio. This tool can play and convert a number of popular media files. Not only that, you can also apply some sound effects and record audio!

Sox is also available on most of the major Linux distros out there. To play an MP3 using Sox, use this command.

$ play <mp3_file>

Final thoughts

There are various ways you can play an MP3 file from the command line. All you have to know is what tool to use and what command to run. Personally, I recommend using VLC as it’s well-known for its features.

If you just want to test the speaker, then using the speaker-test tool is a better alternative as it offers finer control over the tests. For example, the following command will perform a 6-channel check for 5.1 setup.

$ speaker-test -c6

Enjoy!

Playing media in Linux terminal https://linuxhint.com/play_media_linux_terminal/ Sat, 22 Feb 2020 13:27:42 +0000 https://linuxhint.com/?p=55503 In many scenarios we may need to play media from the terminal. This can be achieved with Mplayer and mpv, two great media players for Linux terminal, this tutorial focuses on them.NOTE: It is important to highlight a bug that prevents several terminal media players from playing as root users by default, for this tutorial, except for installations, please use unprivileged users. Another point to clarify is mplayer requires a lot of troubleshooting to play remote videos on websites secured with SSL. While this tutorial shows how to play media in Linux terminal locally for Mplayer and Mpv, with Mplayer I will show how to play videos on http websites, while with Mpv I will show how to play videos on https websites such as Youtube.To begin lets download mplayer by running:

# apt install mplayer

# mplayer What\ is\ Kubernetes.mp4

A new window will open showing the video (in this case the video “What is Kubernetes’ ‘ from LinuxHint’s Youtube channel.

With your keyboard arrows you can manage the video position and you can pause it with your Space key on the keyboard.

Playing remote media from websites from Linux terminal:

Now you’ll see how to play videos from websites in your Linux terminal. The first way using mplayer is almost obsolete and only allows playing videos without SSL certificates, later you’ll see how to play videos on secured websites. To continue we need to edit the mplayer configuration file in the user home we are playing with. With nano or any text editor edit the file located at <YourHome>/.mplayer/config

In my case:

# nano /home/linuxhint/.mplayer/config

Within the configuration file add the line:

lirc=no

As shown below:

Press CTRL+X and Y to save and exit.

Now we can test it:

# mplayer http://www.aemet.es/documentos_d/eltiempo/prediccion/
videos/202002121902_videoeltiempoAEMET.mp4

And the video shows up.

Another terminal media player is mpv which is based on mplayer, to install it on the terminal run:

# apt install mpv -y

Once installed to play a video just run:

# mpv <Video-Name>

In this case:

# mpv What\ is\ Kubernetes.mp4

To play remote media files, for example for Youtube we need a workaround first, on the terminal run:

#  sudo curl -L https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -o /usr/bin/youtube-dl

# mpv https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxxa5UQ6Ma4

Playing remote videos from a specific timestamp is also possible with Mpv using the following syntax:

# mpv --start=05:00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMOZCDhH7do

The command above will play the specified video form the minute 5. You can edit the start time by editing the –start=05:00 option.

Additional tips:

By pressing the key f, you can make the video Full screen, you can restore the default size by pressing the f again or ESC, these options are the same for Mplayer. By pressing Ctrl + and Ctrl – you can increase and decrease the audio speed, it is useful when the audio and video speed don’t match. With keys r and t you can change the subtitles position.

You can find more options for MPV player at its man page or online at https://manpages.debian.org/jessie/mpv/mpv.1. For Mplayer options you also see https://linux.die.net/man/1/mplayer.

Additional terminal media players:

Another option to play media from the Linux console is mpg123, You can install it by running:

# apt install mpg123 -y

There are also exclusive music players, without support for videos such as Music Player Daemon.

Conclusion:

Playing videos from terminal is a good solution, yet the default program configurations fail to play most popular video websites such as Youtube, all users from all OS, Windows, MacOS and Linux, for which the mentioned programs are available, report difficulties with customized solutions to achieve terminal remote playing. For ssh sessions the best option remains to copy the media files into the local device to play.

For remote playing videos, troubleshooting process includes editing the /etc/.config/mpv/mpv.conf with “no-ytdl”, if necessary you will need to create mpv’s configuration file. In other cases the no-ydl will need to be disabled to play, this option is used to bypass the  built-in ytdl_hook.lua file which sometimes brings problems. You may also need to downgrade your ytdl, you can achieve it by running “sudo pip install youtube_dl==2017.07.30.1”.

Vlc Player, despite isn’t a terminal video player, remains the best option for remote media playing, if you need help with VLC LinuxHint has 2 clear articles for you to read at https://linuxhint.com/install-vlc-media-player-2-2-x-linux/ and https://linuxhint.com/vlc-media-player-for-linux/.

I hope you found this tutorial on Playing media in Linux terminal useful. Keep following LinuxHint for more tips and updates.

  • Run the following command to start Google Play Music Manager
google-musicmanager
  • Follow the on screen display to login with your gmail account to the app

Troubleshooting

If you are running this app on a virtualbox VM, you may likely receive the following error when trying to login

login failed could not identify your computer

Fix

From investigation, it appears Google does not support running Google Play Music Manager on a virtual machine. What happenns is Google Music Manager checks your machine MAC address on your NIC and tries to determine what type of computer you’re running. So since this is on a VM, it then that explains the error.

So to get work around this lockdown, you will need to tell the VM to use a real MAC address.

  • First go here and generate a new mac address
  • Open up your VirtualBox > Select the OS > Click on the Settings button
  • Go to Network > Click on Advanced to expand it
  • Copy one of the newly generated mac address and replace one in the Mac Address box.

Note you might have to try the different addresses generated incase the system does not accept the one copied

  • Save and restart your VM
