Google Chrome is one of the most popular and widely used browsers out there, and its user base keeps on expanding. Before its release, browsers like Internet Explorer and Firefox were mostly used and had a large following. They had some excellent features that were extremely useful at that time. However, as technology progressed, the current features were not able to fulfill the people’s requirements. With Chrome coming out in 2008, this completely changed the dynamic of the web browser platform system as, due to its high-speed performance and stable nature, it quickly caught the eye of people and overtook its predecessors. Chrome, however, itself isn’t flawless and tends to have some issues of its own. One particular issue that has been on the rise is the timeout error, which shall also be the topic of our discussion in this article, where we will be looking at different solutions as to how one can fix the timeout error of Chrome.

Solutions to the Error

The timed-out error is usually due to no communication between your browser and the website you are trying to access. This is because either your browser cannot receive the data or the time it took crossed the timeout session and couldn’t establish a connection.

There are several methods with which you can solve this issue. Let us now explore all of them.

1) Clearing the Browsing Data from Chrome

Often, the reason your connection might be getting timed out is due to cookies or caches becoming corrupted and creating problems in establishing a connection between your browser and the website’s server. Therefore, a good option is to clear your browsing data from your Google Chrome. To do this, open your Google Chrome, then click on the three vertical dots, go to the More tools option and finally select the Clear Browsing Data option. You can also open this using the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Delete.

This will then open up a window, having multiple options for you to select from, particularly a time period from when you want to start removing your browsing data. The Basic section will be enough to resolve this error; however, if there are some specific site settings that you feel like is creating problems, you can choose them from the Advanced section.

Clear Browsing Data:

Site Settings in Advanced Tab:

Relaunch your Chrome web browser and check to see if the webpage is loading or not.

2) Disabling Firewall

Another reason why you might be getting a timeout error in Chrome may be due to your Firewall trying to block the connection between your browser and the server. Firewalls are security features installed to protect your systems and block suspicious webpages. However, sometimes it ends up blocking safe pages. On Windows, you have to check this through the Windows Firewall. First, search for Firewall in the search menu and open it.

Next, click on Turn Windows Firewall on or off.

You need to click on the Turn off Windows Firewall option in the private network location settings over here.

Next, click on OK, and now you will see the following on your main Firewall homepage.

Now, once again, check to see if your Chrome is loading the website or not.

3) Editing your Windows Hosts File

Another alternative to fixing the timed-out error is to check your Windows hosts file for the websites’ names not being accessed. There may have been a chance of them being blocked by the hosts’ file. To edit the host file, open your My Computer, then go to the following directory: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. Over here, you will see a file with the name hosts. Open the file by right-clicking on it and using a notepad or similar sort of software to open it. Now check to make sure the website names aren’t mentioned after the localhost section.

If you see the names, remove them, save the host’s file, and once again open Chrome and check to see if it is loading your web page.

4) Resetting and Flushing DNS

Similar to removing your browsing data, you can also try flushing your DNS cache as the website you might be trying to access might not allow a connection to establish with your IP Address. To do this, open the terminal by writing the command prompt in the search bar and opening the command prompt program.

Next, type the following commands to flush the DNS cache and renew your IP address:

$ ipconfig /flushdns

$ ipconfig /registerdns

$ ipconfig /release

$ ipconfig /renew

After these, run the following command to reset it:

$ netsh winsock reset

Restart your computer now, and then try once again to load your webpage in Chrome.

5) Configuring the LAN Settings

Another alternative to look is to look inside your LAN settings and tweak a few settings. To do this, open the Control Panel, click on Network and Internet and then select Internet Options.

After selecting this, a window will be open in which click on the connections tab to open it.

Next, click on the LAN settings button found under the LAN section.

Over here, uncheck the Use a proxy server option found under the Proxy server section and click OK.

After configuring your LAN settings, reboot your system, and upon restarting, open Chrome and check to make sure if it is loading your webpage.

Conclusion?

Chrome is an excellent web browser that has made the process of accessing the Internet much easier. But like all inventions, it isn’t without flaws and might experience some errors. Therefore, it is essential to know how one can deal with these errors in a timely manner.

How to Download and Install Google Fonts on Ubuntu 20.04 https://linuxhint.com/download-install-google-fonts-ubuntu/ Mon, 22 Feb 2021 09:55:57 +0000 https://linuxhint.com/?p=90272

GoogleFonts offers a huge library of fonts that are free to download and use. You can find the best fonts in the GoogleFonts library and directly download and install them wherever you need from their official website (https://fonts.google.com/). To install any font from Google Fonts in Ubuntu 20.04, you can directly download your desired font from their website and install it in your operating system by double-clicking on the font file.

But, when it comes to installing multiple fonts recursively, practically, it does not seem convenient to download and install every font one by one. Luckily, we have got an application available in the Ubuntu APT package repository named as TypeCatcher.

What is TypeCatcher?

Type catcher is an open-source application developed by Andrew Starr-Bochicchio for installing Google web fonts on any Linux Operating system. This application provides features like

  • Previewing the font style and its size,
  • Searching for font
  • downloading
  • Installing and uninstalling Google Fonts in Ubuntu 20.04

The best part about this application is that it allows users to download and install any font with a single click. The user does not have to install it again manually. So, without any further ado, let’s start.

Installation of TypeCatcher on Ubuntu 20.04

The application is available in the Ubuntu APT package repository and can easily be installed on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS system.

Step 1: Open up Ubuntu’s Terminal

First of all, you have to launch the terminal of Ubuntu 20.04 by using the keyboard shortcut keys (CTRL+ALT+T).

Step 2: Update the system’s APT cache repository

It is a better practice to update your system’s APT package repository before installing any application on Ubuntu. Update the system’s package repository by typing the command given below in the terminal.

$ sudo apt update

After successfully updating the system’s package repository, install TypeCatcher.

Step 3: Install TypeCatcher

To install TypeCatcher on Ubuntu 20.04, type the command given below.

$ sudo apt install typecatcher

Once the TypeCatcher is installed on your system, it will be available in your applications menu.

Step 4: Start the TypeCatcher

You can run and start using Type catcher on Ubuntu by searching for “TypeCatcher” in Ubuntu’s application menu and click on its icon.

You can see that TypeCatcher is installed and running perfectly fine on Ubuntu 20.04.

Step 6: Download and install any Google Font

In this step, we will download and install the “Roboto” font in our Ubuntu system. Before downloading any font, let’s first open up the LibreOffice Writer and search for “Roboto” in the font Name field.

You can witness that it is not installed. Now, let’s install it in our Ubuntu 20.04 system, using the TypeCatcher Application.

In the type catcher application, search for the “Roboto” font in the search bar at the top right corner of the application.

Select the “Roboto” font and click on the Download font icon in the top left corner.

After a couple of seconds, the font will be downloaded, and an installed message will appear in the upper right corner, as shown in the picture below.

Once it is installed, let’s verify that either it is working or not.

Step 7: Verify the Font’s installation

Switch to the LibreOffice Writer and again search for the “Roboto” font.

You can see that now we got the “Roboto” font listed in the font name field of LibreOffice Writer. This is just a kind of proof that the “Roboto” font is successfully installed and working perfectly fine in the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS system.

Conclusion

This post contains the step-by-step guide on installing the TypeCatcher application on Ubuntu 20.04 and how to download and install the Google Fonts using the TypeCatcher Application on Ubuntu 20.04.

Methods to fix profile error occurred on Google Chrome https://linuxhint.com/fix-profile-error-on-google-chrome/ Sun, 14 Feb 2021 17:47:43 +0000 https://linuxhint.com/?p=89975 Usually, the “Profile Error Occurred” error is noticed as users open the Google Chrome web browser. It is one of the best web browsers for browsing the internet. as it supports a range of imaginative features for faster efficiency.

This problem occurs by the time you open the Chrome browser on your PC. It will ask you to log in to your account again. Basically, you can store passwords, history, bookmarks, history, windows, plugins, and even sync between Chrome Profile Account support devices. If you have found a Profile Error on your computer, you cannot use any of these settings.

There are a few reasons why the error ‘Profile Error Occurred’ exists in the Chrome browser. Generally, this can happen when the infected files are in the cache folder, =which causes this bug. If you are using an antivirus program from a third party, this error will probably appear. To see the problem, we’ll take some time to solve it. You should consider the following options if there are any other issues:

What causes Google Chrome Profile Error?

We tried to re-create the problem to better grasp the root cause of this unique error message. Here are several likely instances that could cause an error mistake in Google Chrome Profile:

  1. The problem most commonly comes from corrupted archive files that are kept in the cache folder. The Site Specifics and Local State Repositories are complained about by the majority of users of this app. You can fix it by removing the cache or manually deleting the files if this causes the problem.
  2. When you have a troubling 3rd party antivirus, this will happen. There are some cases where unaffected users have sought to patch the bug by extracting or uninstalling device files from the AVG toolbar (avgtpx64.sys).

To find the response to this subject, consider the list of the following approaches that some people used to solve the problem. The strategies are grouped by critical usefulness and robustness, so please follow them accordingly.

How to Fix Google Chrome Profile Error?

Method 1: Delete Web or Local State Data files

Due to multiple users, Internet Explorer also suffers from the above-mentioned error. Both users have confirmed that either or both of the files have been deleted.

Never delete unused files on your personal computer or your flash drive. While you sign in with your Google Account, your personal details and preferences will be kept secure.

Here is a quick guide on how to uninstall the two files that triggered the error “Profile Error Occurred”:

  1. Hold all Google Chrome instances locked up all the time.
  2. Pick the symbol for Windows + R. Then, for the last line, type the percent local app data percent and press Enter.
  3. Navigate to Google > Chrome > default.html until you’re in the local folder. Next, delete the Site Data file that you just made.
  4. Consider visiting this site to check whether the issue has been resolved or not. Remove the current state directory within AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/UserData if you somehow can’t download the Chrome browser correctly.
  5. By opening the Google Chrome web browser, you can see if the query has been fixed.

Method 2: Eliminate the risk of interference with 3rd party AV

Many antivirus applications incorporate window toolbars to help protect you from the risk, but there is no automated solution (Windows Defender).

Typically, without you noticing it, these toolbars emerge during the installation process. These programs are insecure because after your antivirus has been disabled, they can cause harm.

Several organizations also confirmed that when they activated an extra software such as the AVG Toolbar that AVG Internet Protection would have installed, they were victimized in the same manner by ransomware. Users’ plurality claimed that the AVG Toolbar had weakened their framework because of dishonest installments of security suites. The app called AVG Safe Search is a further issue for Google Chrome.

Fortunately, by uninstalling the AVG Toolbar and removing the Sys package, most infected users could fix the virus and malware update problem.

Be aware that the third-party antivirus suites can also have an issue. If you have an alternate mitigation solution, disable it to delete the guilty party temporarily.

If you have uninstalled AVG before, and this applies to you, follow the steps below to disable the optional method if it is installed:

  1. Click the Windows + R key to open the prompt for the instruction. Next, by entering ‘appwiz. Cpl’ and clicking the Enter button, open the Control Panel.
  2. AVG Technology released the toolbar called AVG SafeGuard. The antivirus program name can vary, but it can be referred to as AVG Secure Scan or AVG Toolbar.
  3. Right-click the AVG toolbar, click Delete and then follow the on-screen instructions to remove the tool from your desktop.
  4. Click the OK button to close Google Chrome. Go to the Plugins tab after you press the More Tools button.
  5. In the list of installed extensions, look for AVG Stable Search, and then press Delete (or the Remove button on newer Chrome builds).
  6. Lastly, navigate to Windows > System32 > Cars, setup avgtpx64.sys, and uninstall everything.
  7. After all the optional third-party authentication programs have been eliminated, open Google Chrome and see if the error “Profile Error Occurred” still occurs.

How to Update the Development Version of Google Chrome? https://linuxhint.com/update-the-development-version-of-google-chrome/ Sun, 14 Feb 2021 17:34:33 +0000 https://linuxhint.com/?p=89959 Most people already work in the cloud and use enterprise applications focused on the browser and cloud to do their day-to-day work. Cloud users claim that they are more competitive by their proximity to their company providers. While browsers have become a critical business application, the prevalence of Windows-based software is a big obstacle for IT managers to deal with.

Chrome is popular because it gives a simple guide to business. It follows an automated update paradigm as a business-oriented browser, which offers easy and stable updates in various enterprise environments. Both “stable” and “beta” channel has Chrome updates that are already available.

Also, on the same machine, there is no need to switch between checking the different models. Chrome offers several resources for administrators to track browsers and warnings on maintained PCs. For multiple clients, you’re going to have different types of networks. We will explore the options for changes and the suggestions you may make in this technical paper.

How Often Does Google Update Chrome?

Google would warn users of Google Chrome of any future device malfunctions. Chrome installs both applications and updates simultaneously. But it’s not expected to happen more frequently. , as it depends on how difficult it is to get to the most recent Chrome update.

Major Stable Versions Every Six Weeks

Chrome has an open architecture, and nobody can change the code. Constructions are released every six weeks when it comes to cohesive updates. Chrome 65, for instance, was released in February 2017, and Chrome 66 was introduced in March 2017.

Right from the start, the Chrome team had set up six-week upgrade periods, and they’ve been sticking on it. Typically, the DVD arrives in four weeks, often in eight weeks. However, lately, it only took six weeks.

It is worth noting that Google will modify the consistent schedule of Chrome around ‘no meeting weeks’ and “holidays”.

Security and Bug Fixes When Necessary

I would usually anticipate big security updates to come out periodically, yet it is difficult to predict the stability patch. Just going through the version update logs for Chrome 73 reveals that three upgrades were made in just two months. All of this is a traditional protocol.

You’ll get a couple of security patches, at best.

Chrome will be installed automatically when you’re online. You should still open the menu for Chrome and choose the default “About Google Chrome”.

When Is the Next Version Arriving?

If you want to hear about Chrome’s next major update, check out the Chrome Details Website. This also suggests that stable models have been stable and that variants have also been suggested in the development phases of “beta” and “dev”.

How Do Chrome Update Channels Work?

Chrome development has four styles: canary, creator, beta, and stable. They are rated as the most stable to the least stable (um, Stable).

This is the very reason why people are adding more than one iteration of Chrome to look at the future on their machines. Seeing how features start their development as they move through the release channels is cool.

Canary Construct has scheduled six weeks for the latest division of landmark stabilization. This is where it is preparing and deploying new functions. For another two weeks, the app will remain in beta until it is publicly distributed to the general public. A stable update of the version should be done after two more weeks in the beta channel. To move the secure update back to the next big construction, there are many arguments.

For the remainder of the beta process, up until the stable edition, new releases are done periodically. Usually, the evaluation construction is a release candidate on Wednesdays, before a secure release candidate is sent out (which occurs on Tuesdays). When mixed with the stable branch, all input features become stable.

To check for trouble problems, Google has a specific stable update called “Stable Refresh”.It is a stable version that extends beyond the standard duration of availability. It is used to correct emergency bugs that cannot be postponed at all.

How to check your version of Chrome?

  • First, on your computer, open Chrome;
  • At the top right, choose More; and
  • Click Help > About Chrome.

Here’s how you can update Chrome:

  • Updates automatically
  • Chrome checks for new updates regularly, and when an update is available, it automatically updates when you close and reopens the browser.

Why is Google Chrome Using so much RAM? https://linuxhint.com/google-chrome-using-so-much-ram/ Sun, 14 Feb 2021 17:10:39 +0000 https://linuxhint.com/?p=89945 I remember when I bought my first laptop. I used to do a lot of work on it for my college. It was so helpful in my studies as well as in my leisure time. I really enjoyed having a laptop until I could not install one of my favorite games. A friend of mine told me that the RAM of my laptop is insufficient, and then on I learned how RAM plays a major role in a laptops’ performance.

Well, it’s more relevant if you use a web browser or apps like Google Chrome and the amount of RAM it consumes. People often ask me about it, and in this article, I am going to tell you why Chrome uses so much RAM. I’ll share ways to reduce its consumption as well. So, let’s get started!

Introduction to Chrome

Chrome is a popularly known browser that allows you to search for anything with just one click. You simply have to type the words in its search bar and related articles and results will come pouring in. On top of that, it has a voice icon feature that allows you to search by simply speaking. All you need to do is click on its mic icon and speak, voila! You see what you are looking for.

To perform all these actions, your device must also have sufficient RAM, which I will be explaining more in the next part of this article.

What is RAM?

RAM is a hardware device that stores data and information on the computer. It’s high-speed storage in your computer, and its main work is to store the data of the computer for common use. If you turn off your computer, your RAM storage will be lost.

The largest stick of RAM made by scientists is 128 GB. And this GB RAM is available on your phones, tabs, computer, or laptops.

RAM can be called a primary memory, system memory, or main memory, etc. It requires more power to store information that is of high speed.

Also, low-quality computers have low RAM, so they cannot process the data properly. Therefore, more RAM means more data and information to be stored.

Why Chrome uses all the RAM?

You might be thinking about why chrome uses most of the ram and what’s the reason behind it. As we discussed before, computers need storage to do everything. If you want to download a movie, game, app, etc., RAM is required to store their data. Watching YouTube videos or downloading requires storage as well.

On the other hand, you might sometimes do other works on chrome, like searching for different stuff. You tend to open a lot of tabs at the same time. After searching and clicking your preferred website, it will take you to another tab. By opening a lot of tabs, RAM does its work and stores your information.

Chrome opens all the tabs that you clicked and split and duplicate it depending on how you prefer it that is why it uses most of the RAM.

Increased RAM Usage

As mentioned above, chrome uses a lot of RAM but it’s now the perfect time to ask if it is a good thing to increase the usage of your RAM. I think it’s totally up to you, whether you want your computer to store a lot of memory or not.

As the primary role of RAM is to store data it is expected that when we use chrome or any other web browser, it will eventually increase the usage of RAM for fast processing.

RAM stores a lot of memory when fast processing is required. As the RAM free, it will not serve any purpose to the computer. It can store memory as much as it can because it is in its short-term memory. However, RAM in its full capacity will slow down your computer. For a fast response, it will shift to a shortcut, which again reduces the working ability of your computer.

Therefore, I must say in one way or another, chrome uses much RAM, and high RAM usage will slow down the working capacity of the computer.

Restriction of High RAM Usage

There are two solutions to restrict the chrome high ram usage:

  • First, buy more RAM. It is available in any hardware shop, you can buy it online as well in the form of a memory card or flash drive.
  • Second, do some adjustments to your chrome, which will restrict its high usage.

As the second step is more comfortable to do and affordable as well. So, here are a few other steps to restrict the high RAM usage are as follows;

Closure of Different Processes

It is so simple. Simply click on the task manager, and check the list which app takes a lot of RAM and memory. Click on that tab and end it if it is working. Doing this will free up the memory usage and make our computer process faster.

Usage of Extensions

As we know, the extension has an important role in chrome. In Chrome, you can get memory free extensions as well. It will be available online and you can even download it for free. These extensions will help you clear your storage, which will make chrome and your computer faster.

Some of the best extensions are given below:

TabMemFree

It is so tough to manage the tabs manually so you can use TabMemFree. It will automatically help you manage inactive tabs. It will make the sub-tabs in a single tab and arrange them accordingly.

It will free up the memory, which increases the working capacity of the computer. And without lag, you can do your work properly. When you return to that particular tab, it’ll refresh the tab automatically.

The Great Suspender

As the name implies, it will help you suspend the useless tabs and makeup memory for important data. It is considered one of the best extensions for chrome in freeing up memory. It will also make you choose to mark sites that you don’t want to suspend.

You don’t have to use it manually; it will do its job automatically, and when the system slows down it will free up the memory so that the computer may run faster.

Conclusion

Knowing about chrome and its importance in our daily lives, there are possible instances where RAM problems happen and it can be really irritating To get rid of this, we should seek more knowledge by searching for ways to fix this kind of problem.

As you may know, all information can probably be found on chrome because it’s a web browser. With the ease of the internet, we can save an important task as a “Bookmark” in chrome. So, let me explain to you about a bookmark in an easier way.

A bookmark is just like an extension to save a particular webpage. It can help you save time searching whenever you need to access the same webpage again because bookmarking allows you to browse the same webpage anytime.

One of the best things about the bookmark is that it does not only store the title, but the location, icon, and URL of your desire web page as well.

How to Create a Bookmark in Google Chrome?

Now that the question about creating a bookmark in Google Chrome is raised, don’t go anywhere as I will tell you how we can easily create one. Let’s get started!

In this way, you can bookmark any web page of your interest and create folders to organize your bookmarks in different categories.

Clarification About Bookmark

A bookmark can only store a particular webpage. If the webpage’s content is removed, the bookmark won’t be able to keep it as well. This is because it does not save the content of that particular website for the page.

Import and Export of Bookmark in Chrome

The best thing about chrome is that you can back up or restore its bookmark. And I’ll tell you just that!

To Import Bookmark:

  1. Click the three dots on the right top corner. Just scroll down and click right on the “Bookmark”.
  2. There is a “Bookmark Manager” option; click on it. It will lead you to the next tab where you find the three dots on the right top corner in blue color.
  3. Click on it, and you will find the “import of bookmark” option.
  4. Finally, save it on your computer.

To Export Bookmark:

  1. Click the three dots on the right top corner. Just scroll down and click right on the “Bookmark”.
  2. There is a “Bookmark Manager” option; click on it. It will lead you to the next tab where you find the three dots on the right top corner in blue color.
  3. Click on it, and you will find the “Export of bookmark” Option.
  4. Finally, save it on your computer.

Extension for Exportation

Extensions are the best thing about chrome as it makes your work easier.

Here is one extension I would like to share with you all.

Export Selective Bookmarks

The extension will help you export your important bookmarks.

You can download it from here:

chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/export-selective-bookmark/ahgbiciilcpclcekhegbhofljoolnfei .

Conclusion

As I previously said, things become easier because of the internet, and we can take advantage of this blessing by bookmarking the particular web page that we like or need. On top of that, even after the loss of the bookmark, we can still restore it.

Sometimes all your data or information is saved in drive or Google. And it will lead to auto sign-in of Google Chrome. If you don’t want that, then follow these steps:

How to Install Google Hangouts on Ubuntu 20.04 https://linuxhint.com/google_hangouts_installation_ubuntu/ Wed, 26 Aug 2020 20:12:32 +0000 https://linuxhint.com/?p=66449 Google Hangouts is the all-in-one communication tool by Google. You can instantly send text messages, find contacts, share pictures/videos, and hold voice/video chats. You can also make direct phone calls with standard phones, but it may require additional charges.

In this guide, let’s check out how to install Google Hangouts on Ubuntu 20.04.

Hangouts on Ubuntu

Google doesn’t offer a direct client for Hangouts. Not for the desktop, at least. That’s why we have to take advantage of a 3rd-party app. Here, I’ll be showcasing how to use YakYak. YakYak is an open-source “unofficial” client for Hangouts. Check out YakYak.

Outside of YakYak, there’s not much to work with. Well, you can still follow the classic way of using the browser.

Install YakYak on Ubuntu

For Ubuntu, there are a few options available to install yakyak. Yakyak officially offers a DEB package for Debian/Ubuntu and derivatives. It’s also available as a snap package from Snapcraft. If you’re interested, it’s also possible to manually download and run yakyak without any installation.

Yakyak DEB package

Grab the latest yakyak DEB package.

Let’s install the DEB package using APT. Launch the terminal and run the following command.

$ sudo apt update

$s udo apt install ./yakyak-1.5.9-linux-amd64.deb

Yakyak snap package

Snaps are universal Linux packages that can be installed on any Linux distro. All it needs is snappy (snap package manager) configured. Ubuntu comes with snap pre-installed. However, if you don’t have it installed, install it right away!

$ sudo apt update && sudo apt install snapd

Let’s make sure that snappy is ready to work. Install the “core” snap and restart the service.

$ sudo snap install core
$ sudo systemctl restart snapd

Finally, install yakyak snap.

$ sudo snap install yakyak

Yakyak manual run

This is not the recommended method of using yakyak in the long run. If a new version is released, you have to repeat this entire procedure manually again.

Download yakyak compressed package from GitHub.

Extract the package.

$ tar -xvf yakyak-1.5.9-linux-x64.tar.gz

Mark the yakyak executable file.

$ chmod +x yakyak

Launch the app by running the command.

$ ./yakyak

Using YakYak

Launch YakYak from the menu.

You’ll be prompted to log into your Google account.

Once you’ve logged in, everything is set! Enjoy Google Hangouts right from your desktop!

Image source: https://github.com/yakyak/yakyak

Final thoughts

If you’re regularly using Hangouts, then YakYak is an excellent tool to have. Give it a try yourself. See for yourself if it’s worth it.

Enjoy!

Google Hangouts on Ubuntu 18.04 https://linuxhint.com/google_hangouts_ubuntu_1804/ Wed, 15 Aug 2018 09:23:34 +0000 https://linuxhint-com.zk153f8d-liquidwebsites.com/?p=29408 If you’re a chatter, you already know about all the popular chat clients that allow instant access to all your friends. In the list, Google Hangouts is obviously one of the top ones. It’s a great chat platform that offers very simplistic controls and other enriched features like tons of emoji, group chat, audio/video calls etc.

Let’s check out on enjoying Google Hangouts on the latest version of Ubuntu – Ubuntu 18.04.

The old way

This is the classic and general way of accessing Google Hangouts. Open a browser and go to Google Hangouts.

Sign in to Hangouts and you’re good to go!

The new way

Well, the old way is not as comfortable as you have to open your browser every time you want to chat. Browsers eat a lot of RAM space and there’s no way of noticing any incoming message if your browser isn’t open.

Let’s get a new native client for Google Hangouts. The name of the client is YakYak. It’s an open-source app that’s available on a number of platforms including Windows and macOS. As it’s a native client, you won’t have to open your browser again and again to access Hangouts.

Is there any YakYak alternative? Of course, there is! It’s Wavebox. We’ve already covered Wavebox. It allows you to manage more than just your Hangouts – all your emails and other accounts as well.

YakYak is available in a number of ways. You can install it from the official DEB package. YakYak is also available as a snap and flatpak. Let’s get YakYak!

Method 1

Get the latest DEB package for YakYak.

After downloading is complete, run the following commands –

cd ~/Downloads
sudo dpkg -i yakyak-1.5.1-linux-amd64.deb

OR

sudo dpkg -i yakyak-1.5.1-linux-i386.deb
Install any possible missing dependencies –
sudo apt install -f

Method 2

We’ll be using snap to get YakYak. If your system doesn’t have snap installed, run the following command to install snap on Ubuntu –

sudo apt install snapd

Install YakYak from snap –
sudo snap install yakyak

Method 3

We’ll be using the flatpak. Make sure that your system already has flatpak core –

sudo apt update && sudo apt install flatpak

sudo apt install gnome-software-plugin-flatpak

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

Now, download the YakYak flatpak.

Install the flatpak of YakYak –
sudo flatpak install com.github.yakyak.YakYak_master_x64.flatpak

Using YakYak

After the installation is complete, it’s time to fire up the client. Start it from your launcher. In my case, I’m using Xfce.

At first, of course, you have to sign into your account.

Here’s the screen you’ll be at after successful login.

For configuring YakYak settings, click on the top-left bar icon. All the options are simple and self-explanatory.

Now, everything is ready to go!
